How to Track Blood Pressure at Home
Not medical advice. This guide is general information for personal record keeping. Always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions.
A written log makes it easier to see your readings over time and to bring them to your next appointment. These general tips can help you keep a clear, consistent record.
Keep it consistent
- Measure at about the same times each day, for example morning and evening, or as your doctor suggests.
- Use the same arm and the same monitor each time.
- Sit quietly for a few minutes first, with your feet flat and your arm supported.
- Follow the instructions that came with your monitor.
What to write down
- Date and time
- Top number (systolic), bottom number (diastolic) and pulse
- Which arm you used
- Short notes: missed medicine, stress, exercise, caffeine, or feeling unwell
Bring it to your appointments
Take your log to visits so your doctor or nurse can review your readings. Write down questions as they come up so you remember to ask. Ask your doctor what readings are right for you and when you should call them.
